About Us

Volunteers are the life-blood of the Capitol Area Recreation Association. The generosity of citizens, local businesses, and area contractors has made it possible for CARA to grow from one Little League field and one Farm League field into a large outdoor recreation area.

CARA is utilized by the Augusta East Little League, the Augusta National Guard Babe Ruth League, the Capitol Area Soccer Club, and the Kennebec Valley Horseshoe Pitchers Association, and the City of Augusta Recreation Dept., among others.

Weather permitting, area citizens, State of Maine employees, and workers from adjacent businesses also walk through and around the entire CARA complex from dawn to dusk daily.

The CARA complex is unique. The area developed for outdoor recreational activities is nearly one mile long and includes world-class playing areas for baseball, softball, horseshoes, football, soccer, field hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and cross-country for youths and adults alike.

Hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours have driven CARA's evolution. Construction personnel operating equipment donated by area contractors have provided the "muscle" of the development. Donations by local businesses have been an invaluable asset. Additionally, logistical assistance and expertise have been provided by the local municipality and the appropriate state agencies gratis.

Observers who travel extensively throughout the country have remarked that they have visited very good facilities either funded by major corporations or by city funds, but the CARA complex stands alone in terms of size, varied use, comfort, safety, and natural beauty.

Because of the broad-based level of commitment to the complex over three decades, there is a significant sense of ownership by the legions of people who have so generously contributed their best available means. Our many selfless volunteers give the CARA complex a sense of community and pride.

CARA is a busy place, completely supported by the extraordinary efforts of hundreds of volunteers and the generosity of local businesses. Drop by sometime. We'd love to see you!
